Strategies in Landscape Composition & Design:

We will work on ways to reorganize the scenery in order to achieve better paintings. I will provide several strategies for imparting interesting linear perspective and placement in landscape subjects. We will examine massing, focal point, placement of transitional shadows and light on ground planes, placement of clouds and sky features, tree design and the importance of middle ground.

The Aspects of A Successful Painting:

Designed for all levels of students, this class will focus on aspects of
successful painting: concept, drawing, form, composition, color, and
harmony. We will work with a limited palette of warm and cool primary
colors plus white. Students painting at their easels will receive much
individual attention. Armand, who works Alla Prima—finishing his
paintings on location in one sitting—will demonstrate.

Sunday - Choose one

Seeing Large Shapes and Color Value:

There will be an exercise on seeing large shapes and the color value of
those shapes. The class will have paint time and I will do a painting demonstration |
of the principles we’ve talked about.

The emphasis will be on learning to “see” the landscape:

To analyze and search for the light and shadow in a scene and then to
create evocative color that will enable students to paint more harmonious
and luminous paintings. Students will come to a better understanding of
the plein air process and explore how to use “Yin and Yang” to create
interesting entries and exits through the use of color, value, and composition.

Drawing en Plein Air:

Form, modeling, and value are essential components of painting outdoors, though most students want to learn color. If, however, you don’t have the former components down, color won’t matter. Quick tips for drawing better outside and maintaining organization of your forms and shapes will be our primary focus.

Building Color Harmony:

The emphasis on this day of plein air and lecture will be on palette management and building color harmony. Come with three small
panels and an open mind and bring the colors that you are
comfortable working with.

Quote from a recent PAP-SE student; Spring 2006.

"My workshop experience on St Simons Island was life altering.
I loved the energy and enthusiasm each of the instructors brought to the table. Many different personalities, yet many similar qualities for teaching painting. Great to share time with so many kind, accomplished artists. The workshop has helped to change the way I look at color and light & my whole approach to painting. I'm hooked on the happiness
this brings to my life.
