"Plein Air Painting" is the French term for the
traditional process of
painting out-of- doors, on location in an impressionistic style.
We work outside, from life, in an effort to capture the fleeting beauty of the landscape,
to translate the complete essence of how the scene looks and feels to
us at a certain moment in time.
Plein air painting is a spontaneous reaction to our environment that drives
us to again and again leave our comfortable studio space and brave the
unforgiving elements and work in areas that are unfamiliar and sometimes ill-equipped
for painting. But it is absolutely the most wonderful, exhilarating,
fabulous feeling. To be on location when the skies turn that golden color and the
mountains or the marsh grasses seem to glow is exhilarating. It's like magic.
The immediacy of what we are seeing is that which we try to
translate through our brush strokes in plein air painting.
