Biography
"I am basically a plein air painter, but I choose the subject and feel no
need to paint it literally. I feel that I must paint my feelings for the
subject and to make the painting attractive and balanced through the use of
color, value, edge treatment and composition. Always keeping in mind that
I will not return with the actual subject but my interpretation of that
scene and it must stand on its own. Weather and the need for larger works
demand painting in the studio but the experience gained by painting in
plein air allow a spontaneous approach to these pieces.

I approach each painting with passion and an image in mind of the completed
painting; what to emphasize, the center of interest, a predetermined idea
of the values and which shapes and colors will be dominant or submissive.
If the values are right, and the shapes are right, the painting is 80%
completed.

The most successful paintings are usually completed quickly. They will have
been well thought out with dominant and submissive shapes and values, which
facilitates completion. The ones I struggle with always seem to appear that
way. The question (my favorite) most often asked is "How long does it take
you to paint that?" I always answer with the years of my age because the
past 40 years of painting have allowed me to complete some works very
quickly. They are not completed quickly because I have talent, but because
I have spent a great deal of time and effort to determine how paint works
on a canvas.

My professional start was as a technical illustrator during the 60's at
Marshall Space Flight Center. I began to pursue fine art in the late 80's
and became a full time painter in 2000. My works are primarily landscapes
but include cityscapes, figurative and some sporting art revolving around
fly-fishing. In other words, I paint anything that holds my interest."
