Artist Statement
In 1860 the art critic Theophile Thore wrote "Everything takes or gives
something around itself, altering its surroundings as well as itself
with irresistible persistence. Everything communicates with
everything else and participates in the unity of life.
There is no nature morte (still life)."
With oil and canvas my work celebrates those transforming connections
in our everyday world and seeks to depict the beauty of those relationships.
A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, I continue my
studies through workshops and paint within a community of like minded
artists who share my passion for flowers and preserving the natural
landscape.
May is president of the non-profit conservation group the Chestnut
Group, Plein Air Painters for the Land, an exhibiting associate member
of Oil Painters of America, and an associate member of American Women
Artists.
