Plein Air Demo and Artist Notes
by Dee Beard Dean

Winter 2006 near Davidson, North Carolina

This was a very quick demo on a rather cold day in February at a location very near my house in North Carolina.

I was struck by the contrast of the red barn, surrounded by deep, complimentary greens and some warmer colors in the foreground.

The light was changing fast and I quickly toned the canvas with a warm, light ochre color and sketched in the barn and trees.

Next ... I blocked in some big shapes....trying to cover the canvas as quickly as I could.

I added a few details, thinking of warm and cool colors and Iried to keep the painting simple and spontaneous.

The total time it took to do this quick sketch was 20 minutes. I try not to spend more than 45 minutes on a plein air study because of the constantly changing light and atmospherical conditions.
